If you havent already tried Weber Permalba White in your oil paintings, you might want to consider it for a couple of reasons. I recommend sticking to the most straightforward colours if buying this paint (Mars Black for example). A few yearsago I acquired quite a bit of this paint, and while its decent and has a good pigment load, I dont use it that much. If you use fast drying whites in your mixes you will also find that it speeds up the overall drying time of your colours. It should be done by more manufacturers some other brands have printed labels that are nowhere close to the colour of paint inside, and Ive sometimes had to smear paint on the outside of the tube so I can actually see whats in there. That all said, these are half-decent, consistent paints. It dries slowly and is good for painting wet into wet and for glazing and scumbling. They dry faster than expected, despite the safflower oil, which probably means they put dryers in the paint. The tubes say huile fine on them but thats taking some liberties I think. I do however have a ton of older tubes in this paint, because a store I frequented was clearing them out. The lead tube? There is little reason to manufacture this colour, and even less reason to buy it. The tubes I have seem a little plastic like, the tops are kind of annoying, and there are better and more interesting paints at near the same price point. Its quite student grade across the series and the paint is rather too oily and loose out of the tube in my experience. If you paint portraits you may find a less opaque white more suitable for capturing the translucency of skin tones. Animal studies give no indiciation that it is absorbed biologically, even after long periods of exposure. P.G.O. Flake White does have different properties to Titanium White, and if you are using genuine Flake White it will contain lead, so we would advise against using them. As an added note, I had a couple of colours which hardened in the tube on their own accord. This paint was replaced by a lead-free underpainting white. Quality differences in the pigments used? Maybe they could have put a little more oil or stabilizer in those ones! Antique white can be found in some oil ranges, including the Winsor & Newton Oilbar. ..Also interesting is that its handling is such as it is, Blanc Fixe isnt used as much anymore as a filler, I wonder how much of the properties of Permalba White is a result of it. Calcium also assists in pigment dispersion and reduces loss of dry when added in the pigment grinding stage, which speeds up manufacturing time. Some whites are also prone to yellowing with age, so that is another detail to factor into your choices. They do this by mixing Titanium White with around 12% Zinc White and around 5% blanc-fixe into safflower oil so no great alchemical secret here. It extends the paint, and is also the reason why this paint exhibits a satin sheen when dry. Some people swear by it and use it almost exclusively it is certainly very common among local painters anyway. This line of paint continues to only have one price point no matter what pigment is in the tube, and Daler Rowney endeavours to have these paints all dry at the same rate two attributes which are great for the beginner or periodic painter. Transparent white has a neutral bias, contains no lead and is non-yellowing. Applied straight from the tube, it will allow very little undertone to show through; so it is definitely not suited to creating transparent effects. I buy Burnt Umber when I see it in a clearance bin. Its a brilliant all rounder and a good choice for blocking in. There arent any hard and fast rules about painting skin tones in oils. For a common example, Cadmium Red hue is worthless to most serious artists you simply have to spend the money on the real thing. Im warming up to them. We have fast drying whites available in the Griffin and Ken Bromley Oil ranges. Here in Canada, the price of a tube of paint is about the same as a Gucci handbag, but its like your tools are jewels. They fill a purpose, but these paints will disappoint unless you are a total novice or your practice is simply about covering lots of real estate. You learn the most from your mistakes! If you are not living in the USA, you may end up paying duties on online purchases of paint, so be careful. I suppose some artists can swallow the price on the regular, but its a special treat for me. They remain quite good, but the quality of these paints should be monitored closely, now and in the future. Foundation White is opaque, lightfast and permanent. In no particular order, I have or have used: Gamblin Fastmatte (this line no longer produced), Winsor and Newton London (this line no longer produced), Grumbacher Pre-tested (both new and very old tubes), Grumbacher Golden Palette (very old tubes), Permanent Pigments (no longer produced company dissolved), Bocour Bellini (no longer produced company dissolved), Stevenson (no longer produced company dissolved). The company is quite old (among the first to put paint into tubes) and rests on an excellent reputation therefore expectations are, and should be, quite high for this paint. Do you know much about the crimnate white lead carbonate as Ive heard its a good transparent white for using with French ultramarine to give that atmospheric distance in a landscape. 3.5 out of 5. Original Permalba is a superb white, soft and buttery from the tube, but with a surprising weight and opacity compared with other brands. I can recommend this paint across the range. They are mixed with linseed oil, have a fairly thick consistency that appeals to me, and have a pretty high pigment load across the range. This white is also fast drying. Since 1921, artists have relied on original Permalba White for superior quality and permanence.
